Heart Health Benefits of Fitness: Exercise a day keeps the doctor away!
You know the saying “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”?
Well while making healthy food choices can help to improve heart health, your heart is a muscle and will become healthier and stronger with daily exercise as well. You can help to manage or reduce the risks of developing cardiovascular disease with daily physical exercise.
So how much exercise is recommended?
Just 30 minutes a day of cardiovascular activity can:
Lower high blood pressure,
Lower bad cholesterol and increase healthy cholesterol,
Strengthen the heart,
Improve its ability to transport oxygen through the body…this means your body will become less fatigued with exercise, and your energy levels will increase! Who doesn’t want more energy, right?! You’ll also sleep better and feel better too.
You can get your daily fill by enjoying activities such as:
Walking (on a treadmill or outdoors)
Cycling (recumbent bicycle, or your typical outdoor bicycle)
Join a group fitness class. Some people enjoy group exercise because of the social connection and support from participants. It can help to keep you motivated and accountable. There are many different types of group fitness classes: Love music? Love to dance? Join a dance-fitness class like Zumba Fitness. Or maybe a Boot camp or HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) class if you want not only a heart pumping class, but also, a full body-conditioning workout. Any cardio-based fitness class will get your heart pumping and your heart will thank you for it! Just remember to always work at your own pace.
Work with a personal trainer who can prepare your exercise plan with a heart-healthy goal in mind. They can also help keep you motivated and accountable.
